Stormkeeper's Blog
Random randomness you can understand!

So yeah, it’s nearly the end of August and being completely honest, I haven’t had a lot to write about up until now.   For starters, I’ve finally managed to pick up DJ Hero, Guitar Hero 3, Lego Rock Band and Beatles Rock Band, all of which I’ve been wanting for ages.  The Rock Band games were brand new though the DJ Hero was second hand (and much cheaper than anywhere else!).  where possible, I am trying to buy second hand, but the issue is that sometimes brand new is cheaper than second hand, so I have to save my money.  Rock Band 3 is on the horizon, and there will be no doubts as to me getting it, especially with the fact it now includes a keyboard controller, which quite honestly has me drooling like a hungry dog in a butchers.  It’ll be great to be able to play another game that lets me learn on a keyboard, given I have plans to learn it.  Synthesia is a good thing, but I do think I might need something a little, well… easier to start with, plus I think I need some additional support, though that said having a 25 key keyboard is a good thing on the basis that I can start off with a handful of keys, then work my way up.  Besides that, I also have plans to start up a band with a friend of mine, though it’s not likely to take off properly for some time; more details on this later on.

I did also manage to pick up a few PC games as well, for quite cheap.  I got myself Evolva, Mass Effect, Star Trek: Borg and Space Empires V and with the exception of the ST game, they were all new!  I ended up spending a lot on games the past week or so nut they were so cheap I couldn’t help myself!  Staying on the subject of PCs, my desktop has developed a slight issue where one of my SATA power connectors has broken so I can only have one hard drive going at a time, which quite frankly sucks.  Thje laptop isn’t fareing well either, given that the screen has gone all funny on it.  I do hope it’s just a loose connection because otherwise I’m going to have to shell out for a new laptop, given the gfx card replacement is a good 200-odd Pounds!  Thankfully, my desktop problem is only a couple of quid to fix, though I might get a spare one, in case it falls down again.  In case you’re wondering how it fell, it was simply a case of me getting tangled up with my mouse lead and pulling on the desktop and knocking it down.  Thankfully, it was just that which was damaged… the hard drives seem to be fine which I consider a small miracle.  Not that I could afford to replace them at all.  Not the best week for my computers, is it?

…but I’ve decided that given I have a grand total of 10 people in my PS3 boycott group, I’m gonna give up on my boycott as frankly it’s become pointless.  I’ve updated my PS3 so I can no longer use the Linux function so my protesting is kind of in vain.  I may one day go back to instigating a boycott, but honestly I’m getting frustrated with the fact that I’m one of a few people who is actually following the boycott, whereas everyone else enjoys their newer PS3 games, oblivious to the fact that Sony is increasingly screwing its customer base over.  I’m still against Sony’s actions, and I do hope they get what they deserve with regards to the lawsuits that have been put up against them, but I’m toning back my activism on this issue.  Truth be told, it was killing me inside a bit at not being able to get any new Rock Band stuff (including the 3rd game when it comes out).  I plan to get DJ Hero second hand at some point soon, anhd most likely Heavy Rain as well, but everything Rock Band-related, I’m gonna most likely have to buy new.  Either way, if something else comes up when I can contribute or a boycott will make a lerger impact, I’ll do it, but for now there’s no point.

Edit: While I remember, I’m happy to report I’ve found my headset… unfortunately my DSi, original GBA and Game Boy Pocket have yet to surface.  Other stuff has though, thankfully… I’m not going mad and thinking I never had them >.>

This isn’t giving up by any means, just accepting that the road I went down is not right for the time and that one day it might be.  The group will remain, for past and future reference, but I will not be adding anything to it until the time is right.

This post is going to be a little small a bit larger than I expected, and later I’ll be following up with a post about another company, but I do believe it’s time for an update on things, even if it is a bit late.  I don’t expect to write anything else about Sony anytime soon, unless there’s a major change in developments, but we’ll see what happens.  Anyway, over the past week we have had these articles:

http://news.spong.com/article/21176/Sony-No-PS3-OtherOS-Refunds
http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2010/04/19/sony_firmware_compensation/
http://www.thinq.co.uk/news/2010/4/14/sony-refuses-to-sanction-ps3-refunds/

It seems that judging by the above, getting refunds is proving to be a problem.  I still haven’t persued the possibility of getting a refund though it doesn’t look I’d have much luck at present.  There is also mention here of a 3.30 patch and as you can see, there’s no mention of the Other OS (OOS) feature being restored.  I imagine if (and at the moment it seems a big if) it does get restored, it’ll be on the next patch after this one.  Still, it’s madness that Sony pull the plug on a feature that was advertised as a selling point, especially as to actually exploit the security issue in the first place, it requires more effort than all but the most dedicated of individuals are willing to commit to.  Let’s face it, who but the most dedicated would want to open up their PS3, void the warranty on the machine and risk bricking it?  I’m not knocking them by any means, but the point is that only a handful would even consider doing this, so why would it even be considered that serious and issue?

First of all, I figured that I should put on my activist hat and also elaborate more on the PS3 comment from the last blog.  As you may already know, Sony recently disabled the “Other OS” option on the “fat” PS3s  with the release of their 3.21 system software update.  If you don’t know, I’d suggest you stop here and Google the 3.21 system software update before continuing, just so you have some basic background on things, and also have had a chance to read people’s responses, seeing as I have my own opinions, based upon the responses I’ve read. That said though, I will be using some links as well though not necessarily ones that’ll provide background.

For those of you that already know, or have gotten yourselves up to speed on things just now, not many people actually use the Other OS option.  I mayself don’t use it but I was considering it at some point, though now I haven;t the option to.  Sony’s excuse was apparantly “security concerns”, but essentially that’s like putting a small fire out with a few million gallons of water, when a bucket would have sufficed.  Of course, as a result of the Other OS removal, a lot of people are annoyed though some couldn’t care less.  Of course, this is only scratching the surface of things; first of all, the removal of this option now means that Sony has broken an EU Law; Directive 1999/44/EC to be precise.  As you can see here, someone already attempted to claim a refund from Amazon UK and was successful in doing so.  This sets an interesting precident and certainly one I’m going to both explore and follow through; this blog entry is the second step in that process.  I’ll explain the first step shortly but here’s a bunch of links in relation to the EU law and the PS3 3.21 software:

I’m entitled to a refund (or at least a partial one) on my PS3 because of an EU law relating to the OS removal in the 3.21 patch. I can’t discuss it right this minute, but I will in the next post. I did have something else to blog about too, but I cannot for the life of me remember what it was. On a side-note, I got Roack Band 2 in the post, so happy days! Now I just hope it with the Band Hero drum-kit controller…

It seems that this blog has now become my main blog about personbal things though really my LiveJournal should be used for that although it’s good that I get my tweets sent to it as well, so it’s not like I totally abandoned it, though I’m due for a megapost soon. Anyway, things have started to settle down now; I’ve gotten used to this place, finances are improving, I’m starting to find and organise stuff properly (though list my headset and DSi – doh!) though it’ll all take time. I still have to deal with the shower from hell, although I’m rather happy to report that I have a decent bed and also have my double bed back so I can use it myself now! I’ve been on my laptop the past 6 weeks or so given I haven’t properly setup my desktop, seeing as it needs some work. There’s a slightly more urgent need to get my development/music PC up and running now, seeing as I am getting a tad annoyed keeping everything on the one PC; it would be a good idea to have anything production-wise on the d/m PC so I dont bog down the main desktop with a lot of stuff; a portable/USB webserver would be another great idea too, although I do need to keep in mind that certain software requires MySQL, so I might just use 2 USB sticks to do that. The less I bog my system down the better although I want a new one soon. I’m still at a loss as to why my desktop refuses to play any of the HL2 engine games as well, though I’m hoping a reinstall will help things. I also need to put Windows 7 on this laptop too. Another of my great ideas is to get myself a 1TB drve and backuo everything across my main network drive and PCs onto it so if things go tits-up on anything, I have a recovery point. I should make a driver repository too so I don’t need to go online to locate the latest drivers. So many possibilities though I’ve yet to plan them out.

Anyway, just to mention about the DiggerCast, I have an episode awaiting production but because of the move, I can’t record any more episodes until I find my headset. I also plan to get some new Skype call recording software as well, though I forgot the name of it… I think it’s called Pamela. PrettyMay served me well, but Pamela seems to be more suited to my needs. Well, it’ll tide me over at least until I get a mixing deck and other podcasting gear! Other than that, I’ve been getting into Guild Wars and playing about on the PS3 occasionally. Sadly though, my Band Hero drum-kit refuses to work with Rock Band 1, thinking it’s vocals and if it’s one thing I don’t do it’s sing while sober or around people >.> Erm, anyway, the Guitar Hero guitar works well with RB, so it’s not a total loss… need a second guitar though. I also need to get into learning the piano/keyboard as my friend has an idea about setting up a band at some point. On that note, I can’t remember if I’ve mentioned seeing Assemblage 23 who were quite frankly, awesome. One funny thing about one of the supporting acts that I didn’t realise till last week was that one of the blokes in Tenek was also in The Nine, who did one of the songs I remember hearing at least 10 years ago, most likely more; that song being My Fallacy. Was pretty crazy. I uploaded a pic of Tom Shear on my Facebook, with plans to do the same on Flickr; in my opinion the pic is perfect; perfect lighting and no blur… it was a great shot.

My mum was over for a few days last week and we went to the Science Museum and checked stuff out then we went to see Tangerine Dream (the point of her visit), at their Zeitgeist concert which celebrated their 40th anniversery of their first album and 35th of their performance at the Royal Albert Hall. It was impressively massive, but by god the seats in the middle were uncomfortable; my arse was really sore from prolonged sitting on them! Of course, between the lack of sleep (I have trouble sleeping before daybreak at present), the lighting and their music, I ended up closing my eyes and zoning out completely, because I’m cool like that. To be fait though, after about an hour of doing that and towards the end I felt well-rested and stayed wide awake for the last hour and a half! I remember during the intermission there was this bloke saying stuff and he literaly had the house in stitches and recieved a huge applause! I wish I had recorded it now so I could upload it to YouTube, but alas it never occurred to me. Anyway, heading home was really fun; we missed the last train from London Bridge back to mine, meaning we had to go to Lewisham on the final-final train, where I think cattle-class was an understatement… this was sardine class! To make matters worse, there was an incident, meaning the Met had to be called in. It took us quite a while before we moved. We eventually got to Lewisham and hung around for the N89, then when that finally came, we went upstairs where there was this bloke who was spitting on the bus… charming. Of course, it doesn’t end there… he starts getting confrontational with the guy behind us, which caused his phone to side under our seats… by this point, my mum decided it was best to go downstairs! I’m fairly sure I’ve now caused her to worry about me whenever I get on a nightbus, with drunk people. Anyway, it was nearly 3am when we got back to mine in the end… totally crazy!

I actually plan to go see a Tangerie Dream event in East London although I’ll have to see if I can make it, given 2 days before I’ll be having 3 of my wisdom teeth out. In theory I don’t see why I couldn’t do it, but I’ll see what happens on the 13th… for which I have to be up really early for, like 5am >.< I am not a morning person! Although I’l have to do it, so the sooner it’s done, the better. Hopefully next time I write, I’d have found my DSi or my headset… don’t hold your breath though.

I really need to give my LiveJournal some love at some point, seeing as it’s supposed to be a more personal blog, as opposed to this one which is more for sharing my views, insights and generally having a rant. Anyway, I spent Saturday and much of Sunday at my friend’s house, where we played Rock Band 2. And I have to admit, I’m pretty hooked on the game now! I also got to play quite a few songs on there including Color Theory’s song If Not Now When and some other songs such as Attack and The Kill from 30STM. I was really impressed with the game to be honest, as you could really get into it… I certainly found it easier to play the bass or guitar standing anyway! I was so into the game, that I started dancing while I was playing! And thinking about it, playing the guitar in any of these games, be it Rock Band, Guitar Hero or even Band Hero, no matter what the format, is a great way of learning to play the proper thing. Why do I say this you ask? Well, I have some books on learning how to play the guitar and from what I recall of them, you’re to hold an actual guitar a certain way and with the guitar controller, it works best if you hold it the same way. Playing with the controller (GH controllers are more durable) gives you a great start with playing an actual guitar because you have to hold the controller like you would a normal guitar, so it gets you used to the awkwardness of your hand being put into and awkward position when fretting.

Admittedly though, it won’t help your fingers get used to pressing on the strings… that’s something you’ll have to face later on and they do tend to make your fingers hurt for a while because the strings are pressing into your fingers. I haven’t played with an actual guitar long enough to be able to get protection from the strings as of yet, although the guitar isn’t my instrument of choice at present; that honour belongs to my keyboard (the piano type), which I’ve decided to learn first as it’s a little easier to get into. I’ve actually paid for the learning pack for Synthesia to help me in this goal. It’s much like Guitar Hero, Rock Band and the like, but it uses a keyboard or MIDI synthesiser instead. Admittedly, I’ve not touched it for a while now, but my Rock Band jam session has both rekindled the interest and also made me want to get Rock Band as well! I’m looking at getting the Band Hero Super Bundle, which is 100 quid in HMV at the moment, seeing as it has all the instruments I need to get me started, although the drums are a concern; would they be compatible with Rock Band? I know the guitar is compatible, and the mic should be as well, but I’m not sure about the drums. As for why I’m worried about this, I really don’t want to get another set of drums just so I can play all the games! One thing I noticed though that one of my friends would be happy with is the fact that the Band Hero drumkit has 3 drums, with 2 cymbals, I think they are those anyway. It still has the pedal, but that said, I don’t think it would be used as much in Rock Band, so his foot won’t hurt so much!

I figured that I should probably get this post out there before it’s more or less been a month since I last posted! I swung round here to see when I last posted and I was a bit surprised that I haven’t been posting for longer than I initially thought, or perhaps it was about three weeks since I last posted… I’m not too sure on dates, but I suppose that’s besides the point now. This posting frequency is kind of a bit my sleeping patterns: can be consistant for a while, then goes all over the place. But I’ve been thinking. Seeing as I obviously can’t post regularly for too long I may as well play upon the random randomness a bit more… the random rendomness initially pertained to the fact that I could write about anything, but I may just apply it to posting frequency too; I’ll aim for at least 2 posts a month, in keeping with some consistancy, although when they will be, I’m not totally sure. Helpful, I know but considering I flopped at doing consistant updates for more than a month and a half, I figure that the consistant date thing isn’t working for me. There;s also the fact as well that I’m terrible at making note of things, so if I get a burst of inspiration for writing, I have to put it down ASAP, else I forget the initial thread, which means I have nothing to write about and being totally honest, I’d rather have a semi-consistant amount of content with random updates, as opposed to having a less consistant amount of content and regular updates.  How do you guys deal with updating regularly?  I know you’re meant to, but do you even bother to update on a pre-defined day, or do you just write whenever the mood takes you?  I’m clearly the latter, rather than the former… and I finally understand the difference between latter and former, properly so yay!

Anyway, Even though this blog is more about what I’m thinking, I figured I should at least start doing a cursory glance at what I plan to do over the next month…

First of all, I decided in the interests of putting less strain on this PC, I’m using a spare one that I have for music production and programming/development.  Of course, what I’ll be doing webserver wise is using a USB server on a stick, to make sure stuff such as Apache and MySQL don’t take up system resources, unless I need them to.  Of course, that being said, I may end up using the PC for internet radio as well seeing as it requires MySQL to run.  I guess this then means that this PC will be my PC only for entertainment and downloading.  Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but I just realised that most likely anything involved with multimedia production and programming will be on the second PC now, with this essentially being mostly for games.  I shelled out 40 quid on a few bits for both PCs to help facilitate some of the above…

Warning: This game contains a few spoilers relating to the first part of the game! While I’ve tried to limite the amount of spoilers, some were bound to happen, in order to explain the game properly. If you don’t want to have part of the opening stages of the game spoiled for you, then you’re advised not to click through to continue.

As a handful of you may already know (be it through my Twitter or me ranting and raving about it on IRC), I got Ghostbusters for the PS3. Oddly, the PS2 version was nowhere in sight, despite it being said that it would appear on the same day as the PS2 version. Oh well, at least I’ve saved myself 25 pounds from not buying the game. Anyway, I’ve been waiting for this game to come out for a while, and like many fans of the franchise, I’ve been waiting for a sequel for quite a while. Coincidentally, this month, the Ghostbusters Franchise also celebrates its 25th birthday. 1984 is obviously a great year for many things although right now, Tetris and Ghostbusters are what come to mind. But I promised myself I’d stick to Ghostbusters this time, so no deviation! I especially need the practice for the upcoming DiggerCast Teaser-Pilot.  Anyway, it’s been 20 years since the last Ghostbusters film and Dan Ackyroyd has essentially said that the games is the 3rd film, although I noticed there’s a 3rd film apparantly being released in 2010… but I digress, I should be talking about the game.

I’m just mentioning again that if you click through to read about the game, there will be spoilers. Keep in mind that the Wii, PC, PS2, 360 and DS games have not been released yet. The first 4 follow roughly the same plot, although the PS2 version (which I’ll get later) along with the Wii have a different graphical style. The DS version is different to the others. Anyway, I do recommend getting the game… although it’s perhaps not what people expected, it’s still a great game to play and worth the 45 quid (you can get it cheaper elsewhere) for the game. I got mine from Game, so I got some money back, and used my discount to lower the price by £2.50.

I stumbled across this a few minutes ago and thought I’d share it with others.  Unfortunately, as of yet I’ve not got myself a proper games blog (but it is in the pipeline), so I’m posting it here.  Anyway, although the title says that there’s a free Sackboy on offer, unfortunately they’re now all gone, much to my disappointment as I’d have liked my own one!  Instead, there’s a free Sackboy t-shirt on offer instead, provided you follow the requirements on the site.  Do keep in mind though that it’s only available to UK and Ireland residents, so anyone reading this not from any of the covered areas unfortunately cannot take part in this.

Anyway, here’s a pic of one of the 5000 Sackboys sent out (courtesy of a bloke named Josh who posted the pic on the comments page):

Sackboy!

No wonder Stephen Fry went “Aww, bless!”

They’re selling one on eBay for 50 quid, but honestly, as much as I’d want one, I’d not pay that much!  I do agree with many of the commenters saying that they’re very well made.  I hope they’re gonna bring out one people can buy eventually, as I would most certainy get one!  Anyway, here’s hoping that I get my t-shirt.

And before I forget, there’s a new LBP DLC coming out which features stuff from Shadow of The Colossus, arguably the most gorgeous-looking (certainly the most rare!) game for PS2. I happen to have a copy and shelled out 20 quid (Euros, I think) for it a few years ago now. I’ve not properly played it (though I should soon!), but as a gamer, there’s a certain pride in owning the game.  Also, I signed myself up to ScrewAttack, at long last, so I’ll most likely be commenting on there.  There’s a blog on there, like there is with GameTrailers, but I dunno if I’ll be posting to it… I might just use it as a mirror blog for the main one I’ve planned, to get larger community coverage… I’ll think of something!
